Bio:

Susan Pye has been working with the Stella Burry Community Services agency in St. John’s Newfoundland since 1990 occupying the post of Program Manager for Emmanuel House since 1994. Susan brings experience from working at a shelter for battered women and children and developing a therapeutic program for men abused while living at Mount Cashel Orphanage.

Susan holds a Bachelor of Social Work from Memorial University in St. John’s NL and a Master of Social Work from Dalhousie University in Halifax NS.

Programs & Services

CASE MANAGEMENT

This is performed by our Social Work staff in consultation with the Liason Parole Officer. An Intervention PLan is developed with the Offender in consultation with the Liason Parole Officer. Individuals are referred to outside community service agencies as needed (eg. doctors, psychiatrists, AA, etc.).

RESIDENT SERVICES

Weekly individual and group counselling: to address personal issues such as child abuse, addictions, criminal behavior. Four counselling groups are run weekly. They include an addictions group, a healthy living group, and arts-based therapy group and a general therapeutic group. Other topic-specific groups run periodically, including financial literacy.

Life skills: Assistance is provided with learning self care skills such as cooking nutritiously, laundry, housecleaning, use of public transportation, and budgeting.

Active Living: Assistance is offered with structuring use of leisure time to live a healthy lifestyle in the community, such as memberships at the local YM/YWCA, and planned recreational activities.

Aftercare Services:

After leaving Emmanuel House, former residents can access follow up services, including Social Work services and recreational/social support services to assist further with community integration. All residents and former residents can access the other programs of Stella Burry Community Services as needed. This includes a housing program, the Hope Works education and employment program and the Women’s Offender Program- a project to assist women reintegrate into the community, by providing peer support and resources. The Community Support Program of Stella Burry Community Services provides in home supports and resources to individuals with complex mental health problems, coupled with criminal behaviour and sometimes developmental issues.

Emmanuel House

Description

Emmanuel House is a fully accessible 3-story heritage home in the downtown area. It opened in 1979 to
provide residential-based counseling to men and women experiencing social and emotional difficulties.

Emmanuel House is a safe therapeutic environment where individuals can develop the personal skills and insight necessary for healthy and independent living.

As a program of Stella Burry Community Services, our mandate is to address “… the impact and root causes of poverty, abuse, and oppression. We do this by developing support services and affordable housing that promotes community inclusion and by advocating for social policy changes…”.

  • Exclusions Not able to assist those with history of arson, sexual offences, or untreated spousal violence.
  • Criteria Must be able to live cooperatively within a mixed population.

Community Involvement

Staff are involved with various community initiatives related to housing, sexual health, body image network, women’s issues and mental health. Also provide professional field instruction and practicums to the University’s School of Social Work and School of Nursing.

Also members of the Local and National Homeless Committees and the Mobile Crisis Response Team Advisory Committee of Eastern Health.
